Pool Chemicals – Description and Usage Instructions

The chemical treatment of pool water is essential for maintaining proper hygiene, ensuring crystal-clear water, and creating optimal swimming conditions. Below is an overview of key pool chemicals and their usage guidelines for achieving the best results.

Key Pool Chemicals and Their Usage

Stabilizer

A white, non-toxic powder that stabilizes chlorine and pH levels, reducing maintenance costs. It is used at the beginning of the season, with effectiveness lasting 2-4 months. Application is done manually with a dosage of 20-30 gr/m³.

Chlorine Granules

a) Organic Chlorine 60%
White, fast-dissolving granules that release active chlorine for pool water disinfection.

  • Initial Dose: 5-8 gr/m³

  • Maintenance Dose: 0.5-1 gr/m³ daily

  • High Pool Usage: Double the dose

  • Shock Chlorination (Shock Treatment): 4-10 gr/m³

b) Organic Chlorine 90%
White granules that dissolve slowly, providing continuous disinfection. They are applied via skimmer or directly into the pool after being dissolved in a bucket of water.

  • Initial Dose: 3-6 gr/m³

  • Maintenance Dose: 0.5-1 gr/m³ daily

Chlorine Tablets

White tablets of 200 gr containing 90% active chlorine. They are easy to use and can be placed in a floating chlorinator, skimmer, or fixed chlorinator in the engine room. The free chlorine level in the pool should be maintained at 0.6-1 ppm.

Multi-Function Tablets

A multi-purpose tablet that functions as a disinfectant, algaecide, flocculant, and pH stabilizer. It is applied in the same way as chlorine tablets.

Prescal

A liquid product that protects the pool's internal lining from salt deposits. It is used at the beginning of the season, and the dosage covers the entire season.

Algaecide

Prevents and combats algae growth. It is applied directly to the pool.

  • Initial Dose: 20 gr/m³

  • Maintenance Dose: Add 20 gr/m³ weekly

  • For Existing Algae Treatment: 20 gr/m³

Flocculant

Used preventatively to reduce water cloudiness or in cases of increased pool load.

  • Initial Dose: 60 gr/m³

  • Maintenance Dose: 3 gr/m³ weekly

  • In Case of Cloudiness: 10 gr/m³

pH Minus

White granules used to decrease pH levels. Application is done manually or with a dosing pump.

  • Dose to Lower pH by 0.1 Unit: 10 gr/m³

pH Plus

A white powder used to increase pH levels. It is applied manually.

  • Dose to Increase pH by 0.1 Unit: 10 gr/m³

Bromine

An alternative disinfectant, suitable for individuals sensitive to chlorine odor or with skin allergies. It is available in tablet form and can be applied via a floating chlorinator, skimmer, or brominator in the engine room.

  • Initial Dose: 900 gr/100 m³

  • Consumption in Outdoor Pools: 250-300 gr/100 m³ per day

Active Oxygen

White granules that regenerate bromine and reduce the pool's pH level.

  • Maintenance: 20 gr/m³ every 3-6 days

Safety Precautions

Pool maintenance personnel are advised to wear gloves and face shields while handling pool chemicals. In case of contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.

Conclusion

The main objective of chemical treatment is to ensure both the health and appearance of the pool water. The combination of effective filtration, a proper recirculation system, and the use of suitable and gentle chemicals leads to healthy, sparkling water, enhancing the overall swimming experience
